Swelling and bruising are normal parts of the healing process following chin implant surgery.

Swelling typically peaks within 48–72 hours and gradually decreases over several weeks, while bruising can persist for one to two weeks or longer, depending on the individual. Understanding the expected recovery process can help patients manage their post-operative period more effectively.

Practical Steps to Reduce Swelling and Bruising

  • Cold Compresses – Apply a cold packs to the affected area during the first 24–48 hours. Always place a cloth between the pack and the skin.
  • Head Elevation – Elevate the head on 2 pillows or higher while resting or sleeping to promote fluid drainage and reduce swelling. Resting on your back rather than your side is preferable.
  • Medications – Take prescribed pain relief or anti-inflammatory medications as directed to support comfort and recovery.
  • Garment – You will be provided with a support garment to control swelling.

Additional Tips for Recovery

  • Hydration and Nutrition – Staying hydrated and eating soft foods as recommended can support the healing process.
  • Activity Restrictions – Avoid strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting during the initial recovery period to limit additional swelling.
  • Monitoring Symptoms – Keep track of changes in swelling or bruising and communicate any concerns promptly.

Professional Support During Recovery

Recovery experiences differ between individuals. Dr Sophie Ricketts, a specialist plastic surgeon in Melbourne, Victoria, and her experienced team of nurses provide detailed guidance, monitor healing , and offer advice to manage recovery.

When to Seek Medical Attention

While some swelling and bruising are expected, patients should contact their surgeon if they experience:

  • Severe or increasing pain.
  • Swelling that does not improve over time.
  • Signs of infection, such as unusual discharge from incisions or redness.

Timely consultation helps address concerns quickly and helps recovery remain on track. By following professional guidance and recommendations, patients can more comfortably manage the post-operative period.

Chin surgery, which includes augmentation with implants and genioplasty, are surgical procedures that modify the shape or size of the chin. Depending on the patient’s facial structure and surgical goals, the procedure may involve the use of implants to increase projection, reduction of bone for a smaller appearance, or repositioning of the chin bone (genioplasty) to address the face in profile.

These procedures are performed for both aesthetic and functional reasons. Some individuals may require chin surgery to address structural concerns, such as facial asymmetry. Others may wish to adjust the chin to address the overall proportions and balance of the face particularly in side profile. Each procedure is specific to the individual’s anatomy and planned with computer simulation or CT virtual surgical for predictable results.

Who May Consider Chin Surgery

Chin surgery may be considered by individuals who have a chin is that is underdeveloped, prominent, or asymmetrical compared with other facial features. Overall though, the goal is generally to address facial balance.

A comprehensive assessment with an experienced surgeon is critical. Factors such as facial bone structure, skin thickness, and overall facial balance are evaluated to determine the most appropriate surgical approach. In Melbourne, patients can consult trusted plastic surgeons, including Dr Sophie Ricketts, who takes a detailed and careful approach to planning chin surgery.

The Consultation Process

During an initial consultation, the surgeon will:

  • Review medical and surgical history including prior orthodontic treatments and facial trauma.
  • Examine facial anatomy, including the chin, jaw, teeth and soft tissues.
  • Discuss potential surgical approaches and outcomes as well as discuss non-surgical options.
  • Use imaging or simulation tools to help visualise changes.

Dr Sophie Ricketts prioritises clear communication, ensuring patients understand the surgical process, recovery expectations and post-operative care. This helps patients make informed decisions that align with their individual needs and circumstances.

Recovery and Post-Operative Care

Recovery after chin surgery varies depending on the complexity of the procedure. Swelling and some bruising are expected and generally decrease over the first 2-3 weeks. Final results are generally seen at around 3 months post operatively.

Early in the recovery period patients are usually advised to:

  • Keep the head elevated during rest to reduce swelling.
  • Follow the dietary guidelines provided by the surgeon including mouth rinses as instructed.
  • Wear compression garments if advised.
  • Attend follow-up appointments to monitor healing.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision Rhinoplasty: What You Need to Know

By Face

Disclaimer

This article is general information only and does not replace medical advice. If you have symptoms, concerns, or questions about your health, please seek advice from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Revision rhinoplasty, often referred to as secondary rhinoplasty, is a complex surgical procedure aimed at addressing the unfavourable results of a previous nose surgery. Whether the initial surgery resulted in appearance changes that require addressing or functional issues such as breathing difficulties that require correction, revision rhinoplasty can address both. However, it is important to understand the complexities of this procedure, the challenges involved, and what to expect during the process.

Understanding the Need for Revision Rhinoplasty

Patients seek revision rhinoplasty for various reasons. In some cases, the initial surgery might not have delivered the expected cosmetic results. In other instances, patients might experience functional issues such as nasal obstruction or difficulty breathing.

The Complexity of Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is inherently more challenging than primary rhinoplasty. The reason for this complexity can be due to the presence of scar tissue from the initial surgery, which can make the dissection and manipulation of nasal structures more difficult. Additionally, the cartilage and bone structure might have been altered or weakened, requiring precise surgical techniques to attain results that are lasting.

Furthermore, there is often less available cartilage for grafting purposes. In primary rhinoplasty, the septal cartilage is commonly used for grafting. However, in revision cases, this source might have already been utilised, necessitating the use of cartilage from other areas such as the ear or rib, or from a donor. This adds another layer of complexity to the procedure.

The Importance of a Skilled Surgeon

Given the complexities involved, it is crucial to choose a surgeon experienced in nasal surgery for revision rhinoplasty. Dr Sophie Ricketts, a specialist plastic surgeon, has experience in both primary and revision rhinoplasty. During your consultation with Dr Ricketts, expect to discuss your concerns and expectations thoroughly. She uses tools such as 3D imaging to help you visualise potential outcomes and set realistic expectations.

The Consultation Process

During the consultation for revision rhinoplasty with Dr Ricketts she will evaluate the current state of your nose, considering both the external appearance and internal structure. This assessment includes a review of your medical history, previous surgeries, and any functional issues you may be experiencing.

Photographs will be taken, and contemporary imaging techniques such as 3D simulation may be used to demonstrate potential changes. This is an important step to help ensure both you and Dr Ricketts have a clear understanding of the possible results and any limitations that may exist.

The Surgical Procedure

The surgical approach for revision rhinoplasty varies depending on the specific issues being addressed. In some cases, a closed approach, where incisions are made inside the nostrils, may be sufficient. However, more complex cases often require an open approach, involving an incision on the columella (the tissue between the nostrils). This provides better exposure and access to the nasal structures and allows for more precise adjustments.

Grafting is a common component of revision rhinoplasty. Cartilage grafts may be used to rebuild or reinforce the nasal structure, address symmetry, shape and function. The source of the graft material will depend on the availability of septal cartilage and the extent of the required reconstruction.

Recovery and Results

Recovery from revision rhinoplasty is similar to that of primary rhinoplasty but may take slightly longer due to the complexity of the procedure. Initial swelling and bruising will subside within the first 2-3 weeks, but it can take up to a year for the final results to fully manifest as residual swelling gradually diminishes.

It is essential to follow Dr Ricketts’ postoperative care instructions. This includes avoiding strenuous activities for up to 6 weeks and attending all follow-up appointments to monitor your progress. You will be provided with written post operative instructions after your surgery.

Revision rhinoplasty may address the aesthetic and functional concerns that you may have, however, it requires careful consideration, a clear understanding of the challenges involved, and the guidance of an experienced surgeon.

Chin Augmentation

Understanding Chin Augmentation Surgery: What Are Your Options?

By Face

Disclaimer

This article is general information only and does not replace medical advice. If you have symptoms, concerns, or questions about your health, please seek advice from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Chin augmentation is a surgery that can address the appearance of the chin, especially in side profile view. Dr Sophie Ricketts, a specialist plastic surgeon with experience in  facial aesthetics and reconstructive surgery. In this blog, the various options available for chin augmentation are explored to help patients understand which might be appropriate to address their concerns.

What is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to increase the projection of the chin. This can be achieved through the use of chin implants or by repositioning the existing bone, a technique known as sliding genioplasty. Both methods have their own unique advantages and considerations.

Chin Implants

Procedure

Chin implants are one of the options for augmenting the chin. The procedure involves placing a synthetic implant, typically made of medical grade silicone or plastic, over the existing bone. This implant is shaped and addresses projection and contour. Plastic implants are often then secured with very small screws to ensure stability and prevent migration.

Advantages

  1. Complexity: The procedure is relatively less invasive compared to bone surgery, with a shorter operating time.
  2. Predictable Results: Implants provide a predictable and stable outcome, as the shape and size can be accurately chosen.
  3. Reversible: Although rare, if necessary, implants can be removed or replaced. This involves another surgical procedure however.

Considerations

  1. Risk of Complications: There is a risk of infection or implant shifting, which would require additional surgery.
  2. Limited Reshaping: Implants are ideal for improving projection but offer limited ability to reshape the chin significantly or address asymmerty

Sliding Genioplasty

Procedure

Sliding genioplasty, also known as osseous genioplasty, is a surgery that involves cutting a portion of the chin bone and repositioning it. This bone segment can be moved forward, backwards, or reshaped to address asymmertry. The repositioned bone is then secured with plates and screws.

Advantages

  1. Symmetry: Sliding genioplasty allows for more comprehensive reshaping, including vertical adjustments and correcting asymmetries.
  2. No Implant Risk: There is no foreign implant used. There are however titanium plates and screws to hold the new bone position.

Considerations

  1. Complexity: The procedure is relatively more invasive, with a slightly longer recovery time compared to implants.
  2. Risks: There is a relatively higher risk of complications than implants such as nerve damage, or bone healing issues.
  3. Permanent Change: The changes made are considered permanent and may be more challenging to revise compared to implants.

Choosing the Right Procedure for You

Deciding between chin implants and sliding genioplasty depends on various factors, including your aesthetic objectives, medical history, and lifestyle. Here are some key considerations:

  • Aesthetic Objectives: If you seek a moderate change in projection, chin implants may be sufficient. For more significant reshaping or correcting asymmetries, sliding genioplasty might be the preferred option.
  • Medical History: Discuss any previous surgeries, orthodontic treatments, dental issues, or bone conditions with your surgeon, as these may influence the suitability of each procedure.
  • Recovery Time: Consider the recovery period and how it fits into your schedule. Implants generally have a lesser recovery compared to sliding genioplasty.
  • Surgeon’s Recommendation: A consultation with a specialist plastic surgeon is recommended. They can evaluate your facial structure, discuss your objectives, and recommend the most appropriate procedure .

Whether choosing chin implants or sliding genioplasty, it’s essential to understand the benefits and considerations of each option. Those considering chin augmentation are invited to schedule a consultation with Dr Sophie Ricketts.

This article is general information only and does not replace medical advice. If you have symptoms, concerns, or questions about your health, please seek advice from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

If you are considering neck lift surgery, there are a few things that are helpful to know. In this article, you will learn about what the surgery is, what to expect, and how to approach the recovery.

Over time the area under the jawline may develop laxity that can be addressed with neck lift surgery.

What Is Neck Lift Surgery?

This is a surgical procedure that involves removing excess skin and fat from the jawline and tightening the deeper muscle and around the neck. Neck lift surgery is performed by making an incision beneath the chin or around and behind each ear.

With neck lift surgery, your surgeon may tighten or repair separation of the platysma muscle of the neck and address the laxity skin. This procedure can give visual separation of the neck from the chin especially in side profile view.

Preparing for Neck Lift Surgery

It is important to choose a surgeon you trust and feel comfortable with. Dr Sophie Ricketts will ensure that all of your questions are answered and that you are fully informed as to what to expect during your procedure. During your consultation, you will be asked questions about your medical history and cosmetic goals. Dr Ricketts will discuss your goals for your operation and offer suggestions on how to achieve your desired appearance.

Recovering from Neck Lift Surgery

During your neck lift surgery recovery, you will need to follow the advice of Dr Ricketts regarding medication and physical activity. You will also have to take specific medication, particularly antibiotics, to reduce the risk of infection. During the first week after the surgery, you may experience swelling and bruising around the operative site. Some patients may experience numbness of the skin in their neck area that usually resolves over the first few months. Pain medication can be taken to reduce discomfort. A facial support garment will be used to help to reduce the swelling. The swelling will gradually subside over the next few weeks.

Most patients can return to their normal daily activities within a week or two. They should avoid activities that require exertion for four to six weeks. However, a full recovery can take around 3 months.

Risks Involved in Neck Lift Surgery

All surgery carries risks. When undergoing any surgical procedure, it’s important to understand the potential problems that can arise. For specific risks related to this surgery, please see Dr Ricketts’ Procedure page on Face and Neck Lift Surgery. http://drsophiericketts.com.au/facelift/

Brow lift surgery usually takes an hour or two to complete.

Brow lift surgery is a procedure that is performed to address descent of the brow – to raise skin, soft tissue and address heaviness of the brow. The procedure may be considered for those who have an asymmetry of brow area. Read on to find out how long the surgery usually takes, and what you can expect from the process…

How long doe the surgery take?

Brow lift surgery generally takes between two and three hours to complete. The exact duration of your procedure will depend on the type of surgical technique.

Some of the possible techniques that Dr Sophie Ricketts may use include full endoscopic brow lift surgery, in which incisions are made in and behind the hairline through which endoscopic surgical instruments are inserted; and temporal brow lift surgery, addressing the outer brow area.

What can you expect from the recovery?

After your surgery is complete, your surgeon will let you know how to take care of your incisions. They will also recommend some medications to help alleviate any pain and discomfort that you feel. It is completely normal to experience some swelling — you may find it helpful to apply a cold compress to the affected area to minimise this side effect.

You may experience swelling for a few weeks but this, along with any discomfort that you feel, will gradually resolve over 4-6 weeks. Your surgeon will let you know when you can begin all of your usual activities again – generally somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks. Any sutures that you have will typically be removed after around a week to ten days following surgery.

How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?

By Face

Disclaimer

This article is general information only and does not replace medical advice. If you have symptoms, concerns, or questions about your health, please seek advice from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

What can I expect in terms of downtime after a rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that can address the function and shape of the nose. The length of your recovery will depend on many certain factors, including your individual anatomy, the extent and complexity of your surgical procedure, and your overall health during the healing period.

Read on to find out how long it typically takes to recover from rhinoplasty surgery, as well as what to expect after the procedure…

How long does the recovery take?

Although each patient’s recovery is different, it is recommended that you plan to take around two weeks off work for most types of office jobs. For more physical jobs an extra 1-2 weeks is advised. After discharge and during your first week post op, you will be mostly resting at home. You should be able to resume most of your normal day-to-day activities after around a week to ten days, and it is likely that you will feel up to returning to more physical activities within 4-6 weeks. Your surgeon may recommend that you avoid strenuous exercise, however, for between 4-6 weeks after treatment to help prevent excess swelling of the nose.

One of the side effects of rhinoplasty surgery is swelling. This swelling can take up to a year to completely resolve, although it will be less noticeable after around 2-3 months.

What are the side effects of rhinoplasty?

After your rhinoplasty procedure, you can expect some swelling and bruising at the site of surgery, as well as around the eyes. This bruising can last up to two weeks. You will be required to wear an external nasal splint for your first week and then tape for up to six weeks.

Like any surgical treatment, rhinoplasty is associated with some potential risks. These include bleeding and infection. Some of the risks of rhinoplasty specifically include usually temporary numbness of the skin of the nose; and nosebleeds. These risks and potential complications will be explained by your surgeon at your consultation and you should feel comfortable with this before considering surgery.

When will you see the results?

Although side effects like bruising and swelling will resolve with time, it can take many months or even up to a year to see the final refined results of your rhinoplasty. The healing process takes time, and it is important to understand this before going ahead with the surgery. As the swelling subsides though, you will gradually begin to see how your procedure has addressed the shape and/or function of your nose.

How can we help?

Dr Ricketts has experience in rhinoplasty and will discuss your concerns and expectations with you and let you know if you are a suitable candidate. She will explain the details of the procedure to you, as well as what to expect from the recovery period.

During your consultation, you will have photographs taken, including some with a 3D camera — this allows Dr Ricketts to simulate the changes of your nose so that you see what you can expect from your final results. This is also helpful in showing you the limitations of the procedure to ensure that your expectations are realistic.
